ADHD Burnout

I’m a genius. No the hell I’m not. Fuck you. There aren’t any geniuses. But I am damn good at Rust. I am not damn good at my job. Everyone else just doesn’t know how to use Rust. Get good at Rust. I look at our codebase and I weep!

I can do work that takes others a whole week, in one day. I can do work that takes others one day, in one hour. The price is ADHD burnout. It’s a special kind of burnout that makes you feel like shit mentally and physically. That’s not great for accumulating billable time. It’s great for impressing people at a party. Damn! the women; they love my command-line-interface skills. No the fuck they don’t.

Are you familiar with Byung-Chul Han? He’s a pop philosopher with some nice tidbits when it comes to his naturalistic observations on capitalistic society. I thought he was disrespecting psychology and medicine when he posited that ADHD could have sociopolitical/socioeconomic etiology, but there’s something that rings true when one’s inability to produce is attributed to pathology, a responsibility made individual, and a matter of individual character – indeed, the sum of a human’s output; that is, I emphasize, the quality of a human! Can’t we say that the attention economy exacerbates a lack of ability to focus? Can’t we argue that the quantity of one’s productivity isn’t a matter of pathology, and that pathology is made, through measurement of productivity, a matter of shame?

Are you familiar with the term, “maladaptive”? We might know what burnout is, and how it affects us, but we can’t help it.
